New product reviews: chocolate chickpea waffles, grilled cheese soup, and more

Whole Foods has arrived in my town, which means access to more “healthy” new products — at a premium, of course. I expected it to have everything Sprouts has, but it’s actually missing a lot of the gluten-free baked goods I see in Sprouts. It’s also much more crowded. On the other hand, it has a greater diversity of products. Armed with the Yuka app, I’m trying out the ones I’m excited about:

Banza Chocolate Chip Protein Waffles

Yuka score: Bad (additives, saturated fat)

Gluten-free waffles made of chickpeas and tasting like chocolate, what’s not to like? Yuka doesn’t like them, but I’ve been struggling to find anything in the waffle section lately because of the recent recalls, and these hit the spot. I do get a chickpea taste now and then, but it’s very chocolatey and great with jam. I’m not sure why they called it chocolate chip instead of just chocolate.

Heyday Grilled Cheese Tomato Soup

Yuka score: Good (some additives)

It’s not gluten-free, which is disappointing, but it is a rich, delicious tomato soup with a bit of sourdough inside. I was kind of confused about what to eat with it. Grilled cheese with grilled cheese? I landed on toast. A couple of the other new Heyday soups are gluten-free, so I’m planning on trying those next.

Sweet Nothings Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Dessert Pops

Yuka score: Excellent

Vegan and gluten-free. These aren’t necessarily new, but I saw them in the Yuka app and had to find out how an ice pop got 100/100. The answer is that there’s only four ingredients: dates, peanut butter, cacao, and salt. You’re basically slurping a cacao peanut butter smoothie without the milk. They’re okay, very flat and not very chocolately. But so healthy!

Feel Good Foods Cream Cheese Stuffed Everything Mini Bagels

Yuka score: Bad (additives, saturated fat, sodium)

Gluten-free mini bagels! I’m still trying to figure out the best way to cook them — microwave and toast? Or just air-fry? It’s a little weird to air-fry cream cheese, but at least it doesn’t ooze thanks to the perfect cream-cheese-to-bagel ratio. You only get four in the package, which seems a little low for the price.
