I spent over a week in Maine recently, staying in a rental with family and visiting more family. I’ve done this once before and we kept having to run out to buy more food, or finding ourselves too tired at the end of the day to cook or make a decision about where to get dinner. So this time I decided to get organized. I started a shared grocery list the week before on Apple notes, and we stopped at a Hannaford on our way from the airport to the rental. Here’s what was on my list:
- Coffee and tea
- Yogurt, milk, eggs, cottage cheese, cheese
- Fruit, including bananas and apples
- Salad and avocado
- Applesauce, peanut butter and jelly, nuts and crackers, oatmeal, rice, hummus
- Bread (both gluten-free and regular)
- Cans of tuna and mayo
While we were there we looked for ready-made dinner options and decided on rotisserie chickens, sides like potato salad, and gluten-free cheesecake. I also noticed fresh herbs and decided to get basil and sun-dried tomatoes to add flavor to everything. That worked out as a low effort way to change up lunches like tuna and grilled cheese sandwiches, so that they didn’t get monotonous. They also made great salad and omelette toppings.

We ended up with a good mix of family meals, eating out, taking in, and finishing leftovers.
